This is a common question because most homeowners have never filed a claim and therefore get confused about the process.

  1. File your claim as soon as possible. You can usually find toll free number to call for claims located on your homeowner's insurance bill or policy. Call your agent if you cannot locate a claims number.
  2. You will need some basic info when calling in your claim:
  3. What to Expect When Working with IHI
    • Date of Loss (DOL)
    • Your homeowner's insurance policy number
    • List of damages to your property (it doesn't have to be a comprehensive list, but it is to your advantage to list these details for the adjustor).
  4. You will be asked to sign a contract. It serves many purposes, but mainly it will obligate your contractor to specific tasks and vice versa. It allows the contractor to do the work.
  5. Get Every Promise in Writing!
  6. Do not start your work until you receive your first check and detailed summary report from the insurance company. Go over this estimate with your contractor so taht you each understand the scope of the project.
  7. Do a final walk-through with your contractor when the project is completed.
